Where the Party of Five Cast Went After the Original Series

Party of Five ended in 2000, but its cast never became frozen in 1990s nostalgia. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Neve Campbell built durable careers across television and horror, Matthew Fox found another defining ensemble drama in Lost, Scott Wolf became a dependable television regular, and Lacey Chabert developed an unusually prolific mix of screen and voice work. Their careers also reveal just how effectively the series introduced young performers without trapping them in the Salinger family forever.

TL;DR: Where the cast went next

The short answer is that several cast members found roles as recognizable as their Party of Five characters. Hewitt moved from Sarah Reeves to horror movies and long-running television leads. Campbell became the enduring center of the Scream franchise. Fox led Lost, while Wolf accumulated a long list of network roles. Chabert combined Mean Girls, animation and more than 45 Hallmark movies. Scott Grimes also prospered as a character actor, voice performer and musician.

Why Party of Five became such an effective launchpad

The original Fox drama ran from 1994 to 2000 and followed the Salinger siblings after the death of their parents. Matthew Fox played Charlie, Scott Wolf played Bailey, Neve Campbell played Julia and Lacey Chabert played Claudia. The show won the 1996 Golden Globe for best television drama, an honor confirmed by the Golden Globes record for Party of Five.

That premise gave the young cast unusually substantial material. The actors were asked to play grief, responsibility, romance and family conflict rather than simply fit into familiar teen-drama types. As their later careers demonstrate, the show became a training ground for performers who could carry emotional stories over many episodes.

Jennifer Love Hewitt turned Sarah Reeves into a much larger career

Jennifer Love Hewitt was not one of the five Salinger siblings. She joined the series as Sarah Reeves, Bailey’s girlfriend, and made the supporting character popular enough to lead the 1999–2000 spinoff Time of Your Life. The spinoff was brief, but Hewitt’s career was anything but.

Her transition into movies had already begun while Party of Five was still airing, most famously with Julie James in I Know What You Did Last Summer. She subsequently returned to series television as Melinda Gordon in Ghost Whisperer, starred in The Client List, joined Criminal Minds and took the role of Maddie Buckley on 9-1-1. ABC also credits her with directing and executive-producing work on Ghost Whisperer and The Client List, showing that her development extended beyond acting.

A 2025 Television Academy interview with Hewitt noted that she had filmed nearly 120 episodes of 9-1-1 by that spring. That longevity makes Sarah Reeves look less like an isolated breakthrough than the beginning of Hewitt’s durable specialty: emotionally open characters who can hold the center of a network drama. Her broader progression is covered in this Jennifer Love Hewitt career timeline.

Neve Campbell became a defining horror heroine

Neve Campbell was already moving beyond Julia Salinger before the series finale. The Craft, Wild Things and especially Scream established a film identity very different from Julia’s vulnerable family story. As Sidney Prescott, Campbell became the emotional constant of a horror franchise built around shifting suspects, genre awareness and repeated confrontations with Ghostface.

Campbell later moved between film and prestige television, including House of Cards and The Lincoln Lawyer. Netflix announced that she would appear throughout the fourth season of The Lincoln Lawyer and return as a recurring guest star for its fifth and final season. Of all the original cast members, she made perhaps the clearest leap from earnest television drama to big-screen genre icon.

Matthew Fox found another troubled leader in Lost

Charlie Salinger prepared Matthew Fox for a second major role defined by responsibility under pressure. As Dr. Jack Shephard on Lost, he again played a reluctant leader attempting to hold a frightened group together, although the tropical mystery operated on a far grander and stranger scale.

The Television Academy’s Matthew Fox profile identifies Lost as his best-known role and records his 2010 Emmy nomination for lead actor in a drama. His other post-Party of Five credits include We Are Marshall, Vantage Point and Speed Racer. Yet Jack remains the essential destination in his career: another intense ensemble role that drew on the gravity Fox had developed as the oldest Salinger sibling.

Scott Wolf built a steady television career

Scott Wolf did not chase a single replacement for Bailey Salinger. Instead, he became a familiar and versatile television presence through Everwood, The Nine, V, Perception, The Night Shift, NCIS and Nancy Drew, in which he played Carson Drew. He was appearing on Doc in 2025.

Wolf told TV Insider that Party of Five had been his first substantial speaking role. He also recalled knowing Hewitt through Kids Incorporated before they became one of the drama’s central couples. His subsequent career has been less about one enormous reinvention and more about sustained usefulness: he can play warmth, authority, uncertainty or conflict without overwhelming an ensemble.

Lacey Chabert combined comedy, animation and Hallmark success

Lacey Chabert’s post-Claudia career developed along several tracks. Gretchen Wieners in Mean Girls became her most quoted comedic role, while her voice credits grew to include The Wild Thornberrys, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Transformers: Rescue Bots and Young Justice.

Chabert also became one of Hallmark’s most prolific stars. The channel credits her with more than 45 movies, along with hosting and executive-producing work. In a pleasing reunion for longtime fans, she and Wolf played siblings again in the 2023 Hallmark film A Merry Scottish Christmas. Their adult chemistry carried a trace of Bailey and Claudia, but the project worked as a reunion rather than an attempt to reproduce the old series.

Scott Grimes and Paula Devicq also moved beyond the Salinger home

The supporting cast produced its own durable careers. Scott Grimes, who played Bailey’s friend Will McCorkle, went on to portray Dr. Archie Morris on ER, Donald Malarkey in Band of Brothers and Lt. Gordon Malloy on The Orville. His voice performance as Steve Smith on American Dad! added another long-running role, while his music career continued alongside acting.

Paula Devicq, remembered as Owen’s nanny and Charlie’s eventual wife Kirsten Bennett, later appeared in projects including 100 Centre Street, The Grid, Rescue Me, Arbitrage and Finding Julia. Her lower public profile compared with some of her co-stars should not obscure how important Kirsten became to the original show’s evolving definition of family.

The cast escaped the usual nostalgia-show ending

The most striking feature of these Party of Five cast careers is their variety. There was no single route away from the series: Campbell found horror immortality, Fox moved into another landmark ensemble, Hewitt became a recurring network-TV lead, Wolf built consistency, and Chabert created a career spanning comedy, animation and romantic television movies.

That range is part of the original series’ legacy. Party of Five was remembered for making viewers care about the Salingers, but it also gave its performers room to develop distinctive emotional strengths. Revisiting it now means seeing not only a beloved 1990s drama, but the starting point for several careers that continued shaping television and film long after the family restaurant closed.
